Selena Gomez and The Weeknd may be two of the hottest names in music and one of the hottest new couples in Hollywood — but that doesn’t mean they will be combining the two to create fire in the studio together anytime soon.
Despite rumors to the contrary, Selena set the record straight about working with The Weeknd in a radio interview with Boston’s 103.3 AMP. Radio host TJ Taormina asked Selena point-blank: “What’s up with The Weeknd, Selena — are you guys doing music together?”
And while a Selena/Weeknd collaboration would be peak relationship goals, unfortunately, it’s not happening. “No, no we’re not,” she told host TJ.
When pressed for a quote that might offer fans some glimmer of hope at the possibility of a duet, Selena shut it down quickly. “I can’t give those people what they want,” she said. “I’m sorry, and it’s not true.”
Rumors of Selena and The Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) working together on a song first surfaced after the Wikipedia page for songwriter/producer Max Martin listed Selena’s upcoming single “In Her Element” as “(featuring The Weeknd).” The entry has since been deleted.
And if her newest song “Bad Liar” is any indication, Selena’s latest work won’t even be about The Weeknd — let alone feature him. She recently revealed that she started working on “Bad Liar” — a track about “that feeling when you’re obsessed with someone” — over a year ago, way before she and The Weeknd first started dating.
Thankfully, the internet has already mashed up Selena’s and The Weeknd’s music, even if they won’t do it themselves.
