In we-really-need-to-let-this-go feud news, Katy Perry just revealed more information about her highly-publicized beef with Taylor Swift. (Yes, the drama that started over three years ago about back-up dancers.)
In her new interview with NME, Perry explains why she decided to open up about her “bad blood” with Swift during Carpool Karaoke with James Corden a few weeks ago. “…well, James Corden makes me and the whole world feel very safe,” Perry told NME, according to Refinery29. “No one has asked me about my side of the story, and there are three sides of every story: one, two, and the truth.”
She continued, “I mean, I’m not Buddha — things irritate me. I wish that I could turn the other cheek every single time, but I’m also not a pushover, you know? Especially when someone tries to assassinate my character with little girls [her fans]. That’s so messed up!”
The Perry-Swift feud reached critical mass in 2014 when Swift released “Bad Blood,” a song from her 1989 album that allegedly details their tête-à-tête. The track was produced by Perry’s longtime collaborator Max Martin; however, the “California Gurls” singer doesn’t harbor any resentment toward him for working with Swift.
“I can’t speak for [Max], but he didn’t know [who ‘Bad Blood’ was about],” Perry said. “I’m not supposed to tell him what he can and can’t do. I’m very fair; I’m super-duper fair and I’m not one of those people who’s like, ‘You can’t do that because I don’t like that person’. Just, like, you do you, make your own choices… I’m not his mother.”
If this entire ordeal is making you roll your eyes, you’re not alone. Female feuds are reductive in general (aren’t we past pitting women against each other?), but the Swift-Perry story is on a new level. In the past, both Perry and Swift have talked about the power of female unity; however, talking about this feud — even vaguely or in passing — further drives women apart. At this point, it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong; truthfully, that didn’t even matter in the first place. (Need we remind you this whole thing is about people who just decided to change jobs!) The best thing for everyone is to put this whole thing to bed once and for all.
