The 13 Reasons Why cast and creators have been dropping hints about season two for months, but we still don’t actually know anything. Brian Yorkey can only say, “We’ll see other perspectives besides Hannah’s” so many times before we implode. What does that even mean? So Clay gets some voice-over action next season—big whoop! That doesn’t satisfy our thirst for 13 Reasons Why tea. It doesn’t even make a dent.
But the addition of seven new actors certainly does. Variety reports 13 Reasons Why will feature seven new characters next season, their ages ranging from high school to grown-ass adult. Just think of all the potential voice-overs! (Kidding.)
Anne Winters, Bryce Cass, Chelsea Alden, Samantha Logan, Allison Miller, Ben Lawson, and Kelli O’Hara are joining the supporting cast of Netflix’s controversial show, which centers on a high school girl who took her own life and left 13 cassette tapes behind explaining her decision. It’s based on the best-selling novel by Jay Asher.
Winters will play Chloe, Liberty High School’s new head cheerleader and resident It Girl. Cass is coming on board as Cyrus, a cynical outcast who becomes an advocate for Liberty High’s unpopular kids. Alden plays Cyrus’ sister, Mackenzie, who Variety describes as “artsy” and “witty.” Logan portrays Nina, a LHS sports star who’s hiding a big secret. (Her storyline has shades of Zach’s from season one, don’t you think?)
Miller, obviously, is playing an adult character—specifically, a litigator named Sonya. She’ll most likely work with Hannah’s parents on their lawsuit against the school. Lawson rounds out the new grown-up characters as Rick, a beloved baseball coach at LHS.
O’Hara’s character, Jackie, is a bit Clay-adjacent. Like our season-one protagonist, Jackie is sweet and whip-smart; however, she routinely sticks up for victims of bullying, which is something Clay absolutely didn’t do.
These new characters make 13 Reasons Why season two even more interesting—and mysterious. After all, Yorkey and company don’t have any source material to work from; this is all brand-new, uncharted territory. Wherever they take the story, though, one thing is certain: It’ll be emotional as hell. Stock up on tissues accordingly.
